Martis Camp House - Dennis E. Zirbel, Architect

A Modern Gem Perched in the Mountains: A Look at a Custom Residence in Martis Camp

This custom residence in Martis Camp transcends the typical "home on a hill" trope. Perched strategically on a down-sloping site, the dwelling maximizes its connection to the surrounding golf course while maintaining privacy from neighbors. Floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the 6,699-square-foot design capture panoramic vistas of the rolling fairways and distant mountain peaks.

A Play of Topography and Views

The architects cleverly leveraged the existing topography to create a multi-level living experience. The residence is positioned on the flattest portion of the site, allowing for expansive outdoor spaces and unobstructed views from virtually every room. This deliberate approach blurs the lines between interior and exterior, fostering a true connection with the natural surroundings.

A Grand Entrance Sets the Stage

Awe-inspiring from the outset, the residence boasts a dramatic entry sequence. A towering, 10-foot pivot door crafted from artistic oak and glass beckons guests inside. Framed by a mosaic of hot-rolled steel, the entryway offers a glimpse of the stunning waterfall cable staircase within, hinting at the modern design language that awaits.

Light, Space, and Materiality

The interior is a symphony of light, space, and meticulously chosen materials. The great room takes center stage, bathed in natural light streaming through expansive Weiland doors and windows. The view unfolds like a gallery, showcasing the manicured green of the 6th hole. Adjacent, the kitchen features a sleek, waterfall island crafted from travertine, while the dining room seamlessly integrates a stunning display for the homeowner's wine collection.

A Blend of Comfort and Luxury

Comfort and luxury coexist throughout the residence. Soaring ceilings finished in western red cedar contrast beautifully with the wide-plank French white oak flooring and etched basalt tile accents. Walls, doors, and cabinetry are clad in warm rift white oak, fostering a sense of organic elegance.

A Haven for Relaxation and Entertainment

Dual master suites boast fireplaces, expansive windows, custom walk-in closets, and private outdoor spaces, offering a sanctuary for rest and rejuvenation. Upstairs, four guest rooms, including a playful bunk room designed for children, provide ample accommodation for family and friends. A recreation room with a wet bar and expansive deck at the top of the staircase further amplifies the home's entertainment potential.

Beyond the captivating staircase, the residence boasts a plethora of amenities. A spa with a steam room fosters year-round relaxation, while a dedicated media room offers a cozy retreat for movie nights. The terraced backyard, featuring multiple covered patios, decks, fire pit, and spa, creates an ideal venue for both social gatherings and quiet enjoyment.

Sustainable Design Principles

This exceptional residence is not just about aesthetics. The architects prioritized sustainable design principles. High R-value sprayed-in insulation, LowE-366 glazing, and Energy Star appliances ensure energy efficiency. Additionally, the use of engineered lumber products and native plantings minimizes environmental impact.

A Mountain Contemporary Masterpiece

The unique beauty of this home lies in its ability to be both commanding and serene. It's a mountain contemporary masterpiece, characterized by a seamless blend of sloped and flat roofs, expansive glazing, and contemporary detailing throughout. The creative solutions employed in the design, coupled with its unique setting, elevate this custom residence to a class of its own within the Martis Camp community.
