The Golf Club at Devils Tower - The Legend in Hulett, Wyoming
The Golf Club at Devils Tower in Hulett, Wyoming is the legacy of two men who share a name and vision.
James S. and Jim D. Neiman are legends of a new West. For generations a family business of logging and ranching in eastern Wyoming has been preserved. Father and son then created a private golf course and community that married the natural beauty of their home state with scenic views and old-fashioned hospitality. Their family has lived in the shadows of the Devils Tower National Monument for generations.
“A few years back we decided Hulett could use a few things the big cities have. Mostly we’re proud of the things we don’t have – like air pollution, noise, traffic, and endless acres of concrete,” Jim Neiman Sr. said. “But we did want a pro-quality golf course and an airport.”
The Neiman’s built The Golf Club at Devils Tower and its community into a private golf destination with a championship-level 18-hole course as its centerpiece. Take off from anywhere and land practically right on the course. The Hulett airfield is conveniently located to go from Tarmac to Tee in 10 minutes.
The new clubhouse opened in 2019. The design of the clubhouse was intended to celebrate the rich history of the area. With the project being designed around an 1890s bar, the western architectural style harmoniously ties together the interior artifacts with charm of the exterior. The main level being only 6,000 SF has been planned to maximize efficiency and flexibility. Separating the breezeway from the grill with a sliding glass wall allows the facility to expand from 60 patrons to 200. Additionally, these two spaces can also house different functions at the same time. Patrons visiting the clubhouse often work their way through the clubhouse displays and artifacts and end up at the main show piece....The Bar. The bar area anchors the clubhouse main level, with an elevated outdoor deck, while overlooking a fire pit, and the 10th and 18th holes.
The largest building material component of the clubhouse also happens to be its most sustainable and environmentally responsive element. The Neiman’s local sawmill in Hulett, WY supports the majority of the population (383) in this quaint town. One primary focus of the mill is the harvest and milling of Ponderosa Pine. The majority of the clubhouse is constructed of wood framing and majority of these wooden elements were harvested and milled locally. The local material and detail within the material is most visible in the exterior siding, ceilings, breezeway flooring, and the wrap around covered porches.
A regulation skeet range was added to the amenities of the golf club. Families and corporate outing guests enjoy firing off a few rounds surrounded in unspoiled scenery. “When we say, ‘there’s no place like this on earth,’ we think that’s a good thing,” Jim Neiman Jr. said. “The only thing better is being one of the lucky folks who get to live out here.”
